A PRESIDENT WHO PERFORMS

By LINDSEY BULLERDICK

The basic duties of a class president are best known as resolving problems, communicating ideas with members of administration, and leading their class through high school.  While many are capable of meeting the simplest requirements of this job, it takes an exceptional leader to go above and beyond their duties.  WHS Class of 2018 president, Maya Diaz, works tirelessly to exceed the basic requirements of her job on a daily basis.

Prom, Lip Sync Battle, and National Student "Walkout" at WHS are just a few of the events that Diaz has had a hand in organizing.  These events are anticipated by every class and they require a great deal of teamwork and planning.  When asked about her favorite experience as Class President, Diaz stated,  “My favorite experience as class president has definitely been the event planning because we got to plan things like Prom and make it the best night for everybody.  We sit down and brainstorm and then actually make the ideas come to life.”

While it may seem simple, there are many pressures involved when trying to please such a large crowd.  Acknowledging this, Maya shared how she handles this daunting task.  “It is challenging knowing that you can’t please everyone,” expressed Diaz, “but every time [student council] makes a decision, we try our hardest to do so on a voting basis so that the students get to choose.”  These highly anticipated events are often expected to meet high standards; making the job of a president that much harder.

The responsibilities of Class President involve much more than planning events, however.  Maya must serve as an example for her peers, encouraging friendship and unity among her class.  “My hopes have always been the same since the day I joined student council, my freshman year.  I want everyone to go through school having lots of friendships and an overall united front,” stated Diaz.  An inclusive and positive attitude is crucial to have as a class leader.

As the class of 2018 approaches the final weeks of high school, there is much to look forward to.  Consequently, this means that Diaz’s work is nowhere near finished.  Senior banquet, the all night party, and graduation are just a handful of the events that she is working endlessly to perfect.  Maya hopes to encourage solidarity throughout the graduating class as they finish out the year together one last time.

While there may not be much time left for the seniors of WHS, one thing is for sure: fun times await the senior class.  Diaz’s closing statement is one that most can echo.  “My hope for this upcoming semester is for everyone to just have a lot of fun. We have old and new events to look forward to!”  Events such as Mr.WHS even appear to be returning to the school for the first time in three years.  The senior class has a ton to look forward to thanks to a president who performs!
