The track team’s season started March 28th, and as expected, Washingtonville put on quite an impressive show. While the team as a whole did well, some individuals stood out above the rest.
Perhaps one of the most impressive athletes of the day is Stephanie Fuentes. As a freshman, Fuentes threw an incredible 60’-11” discus toss. This was the farthest discus throw by any Washingtonville athlete at the meet, and she’s not done improving yet. Fuentes is only a freshman.
Another student athlete who performed well is, junior at Washingtonville High school and captain of the track team, Tom Garrison. Garrison and the rest of the boys 4x800 were able to place first, with second place coming in more than 10 seconds behind them. Individually, Garrison ran the 2000 steeplechase with a time of 6:42.6. This time was good enough to earn him second place in this race. The junior is coming off an exemplary indoor season, and he should excel even more outdoors, especially since many members of the track team have exclaimed that it is unexplainably easier to run outside. Garrison “[hopes] to run 4:19 in the mile and 9:23 in the two mile, hopefully getting me to states.”

After the terrific start to the season, the future looks bright for the track and field team, and Coach White Jr. agrees. When asked what he wants out of this season, he replied, “The goal is to have a very successful year and to have athletes improve. We have relay teams and individual athletes that I think should medal in state meets.”
Come out and support the track and field team at their next meet on Tuesday at home!
