VOLLEYBALL TEAM MAKES WIZARD HISTORY

By TUCKER CERGOL

On Tuesday, October 31st, the Wizard’s volleyball team travelled to Monroe to face off against the Crusaders in their section playoff game.  This was the team’s first playoff appearance in 29 years and will be ruled as one of their best seasons, putting them into the history books.

The girls of Washingtonville's volleyball team were not only satisfied with being in the playoffs;  they were also determined to make some noise.  Due to a delayed entry into the playoffs, the team was put up against one of their toughest competitors, the Monroe Crusaders.

Monroe has a strong team filled with young athletes who have many years ahead of them, resulting in the Crusaders being a major threat to all teams in the future.  Although the Wizards knew this would be a tough team to beat, they did not steer away from the challenge.  The Wizards fought tooth and nail for every point, but fell short of a win.

Captain Sabrina LiVolsi exclaimed, “Every year this team has grown and the program has improved dramatically. As a three year varsity captain, I’m so proud of the 2017 team for making school history. Not only did we make sections, but we also beat the biggest powerhouse in section 9, Pine Bush.”

LiVolsi also proudly stated, “Five years ago, the idea of making sections never crossed our minds because of how far reached the goal was.  Our accomplishments will be remembered for years to come and I’m honored to have been a part of this team.”  Due to her incredible talent, Sabrina has already committed to the University of Scranton to continue her volleyball career.

The Washingtonville volleyball team had a fantastic year overall, which was shown by their level of play throughout the season.  Coach Hall diligently prepared the girls for their season emphasizing the importance of hard work in order to succeed, which is exactly what they did.

It was clear the Wizards had a goal in mind throughout the season knowing there was the potential to make the sections playoffs.  Senior captain, Alexa Kraiza, emphasized, “The team worked extremely hard this year and it showed as we were successful in our goal of making sections.  This team made school history and, as a captain, I am very proud.  This was our best year yet and I’m excited to see what the future holds.”

In the end, Washingtonville's volleyball team was able to overcome the odds and make history topping off their amazing season.  Even though their season has come to an end, it is evident the girls are extremely proud of what they were able to accomplish.
