SKIPPING PAST SENIOR YEAR

By DEVIN LEWIS

The term “senioritis” has already been kicked around the halls by numerous students at Washingtonville High School.  As many are aware, along with senioritis comes senior skip day. Seniors across the high school have been discussing possible days to ditch the books for fun and tradition, but ultimately have not been able to come to a concise decision about which day would be best.

DEVIN LEWIS FOR THE WIZARD WEEKLY
Over the past few weeks, there have been several days where seniors were seeking any excuse to stay home and avoid going to school. For instance, the day after Halloween, the Monday prior to Election Day, and, of course, the highly anticipated and hyped up “Call of Duty” release day were prime examples of days that seniors wanted to ditch school.

Various factors go hand in hand with the seniors not agreeing on a certain day. Perhaps at the top of the list is the difficulty of students’ classes.  Once students miss a day, especially in AP classes, the stress that was already there continues to escalate. Therefore, some seniors feel they are required to attend every class.

This was not the case with senior and AP Bio student, Alexa Siciliano.  Alexa took the day off after Halloween since she wanted to enjoy her last Halloween night as a Wizard with her friends.  She exclaimed, “Although I would have to stay after the following day, I had a lot of fun the day I skipped so it balanced out.”

Alexa definitely believes in the so called “senioritis.” She reminisced about her earlier high school days. “Before I was a senior, I’d hear about it and think it was all talk. But now that I’m here and see how my classmates are responding to senior year, it is real.” Alexa added, “I can't imagine what it’s going to be like later in the year.”

For others, going to school is not so inopportune.  School days as a Wizard  should not be taken for granted as one day students will be walking out of the high school looking back at the appreciable memories for the very last time. Senior Kevin Roman understands this concept and he states, “Since it is senior year, we should value our last days in high school; life will never be like this again.”

On the opposing side, there are students who would spend every second of their day outside the walls of the high school. Senior skip days are obviously a gift for those, but will they one day regret those days?  That is the key question here.

“Senioritis” plays a role in the school year for all students at some point.  Some more than others such as senior, Tarek Abu-Zeid, who jokingly admits, “I’ve had senioritis since my freshman year!”

For many seniors, as they progress in through their final year as Wizards and as high schoolers, senioritis will definitely play a major role in their lives.  The main thing to remember along the way is to make as many memories as possible because these truly are some of the best years of a student’s life.
