WIZARD TAILGATE: ONE FOR THE AGES

By ANDREW FITZPATRICK

On October 7th, Washingtonville High School hosted a tailgate for the Wizard community where all were welcome.  It was a beautiful fall day, although it felt more like summer, and a good time was had by all.

At the tailgate, several clubs, classes, and businesses attended such as The Girl Scouts, Student Coalition, Mrs. Nimmo’s 5th grade class, Betty’s Country Kitchen, The National Art Honor Society,  and the E-Sports Club.  These organizations and groups donated their time to set up  booths at the tailgate, mainly selling food and other goods, whose profits went towards various organizations.

The E-Sports Club raised a great deal of awareness about their organization by giving away an XBOX Madden 18 game.  In order to win this game, Mr. Calderin required participants to scream, “Go Wizards!” as loud as they could, entering their names into a raffle.  Aiden Mahoney was thrilled when he was announced as the winner during the homecoming football game.

Mrs. Nimmo’s 5th grade class came all of the way from Little Britain and set up a booth at the tailgate. The students accepted donations and all of the money that they raised went towards Hurricane Relief for the United States and Puerto Rico.

“I think it was a success,” Darcy Doelger, a senior at Washingtonville High School stated. “I went when I was a kid and I thought they did a really good job this year.”  Doelger, a member of Student Coalition, was there to run their booth.  They were there to collect donations and to raise money for their club.  On the flaws of this event, Darcy Doelger expressed, “When I was younger, the tailgate had different events that people could participate in and this year they didn’t have those events.  So maybe if they brought more into it, it would draw a bigger crowd.  But it was a really nice event and I feel like we should continue it.”

Morgan Creeden, also a senior at WHS, added, “It was a really nice event.” She was attending the event with some of her friends and she really loved the atmosphere at the tailgate.  Creeden  added, “They could have brought games in like corn hole or ring toss to draw more attention to the event, but it was still a nice community event.”

All in all, the Washingtonville community should continue to do these tailgates more often due to the success and feedback that they have received from the people of Washingtonville.
