By JADE CURTIS

Here at Washingtonville High School, there is an overwhelming level of talent amongst the students. Whether it’s athletically, academically, or musically, the individuals here can do it all. One student in particular, a senior named Richard DiVirgilio is a very talented individual who has an immense passion for theater and performing. Richard has played a major role in Masque and Mime, Washingtonville’s Drama Club, since he was a freshman.

JADE CURTIS FOR THE WIZARD WEEKLY
Although he did not officially participate in theatre until sixth grade, with his very first production being Beauty and the Beast Jr. where he played Lumiere,  nonetheless, Richard still felt the need to sing and dance constantly. He expressed, “In a way, I always knew that my home was in musical theatre because I consistently felt like there was something more that I could do with the talents and strengths I was developing as a child; the ability to impact others with my performing was a feeling that I simply could not miss out on.”

Richard feels a connection to all of the roles he undertakes.  Some of his favorite roles that he has played include Willy Wonka in Willy Wonka Junior, Sebastian in The Little Mermaid Junior, TJ in Sister Act, Ching Ho in Thoroughly Modern Millie, and most recently, Buddy the Elf in Elf Junior.  In this latest play, the musical will be performed this Friday December 7th at 7:00, and Saturday December 8th at 2:00. Another showing will continue on Saturday following the dismissal of the program at 2:00. Be sure to come see our Buddy, Richard!

As a result of musical theatre, Richard has learned the true meaning of confidence, and feeling comfortable enough to make a fool of himself on stage in front on hundreds of people; the amazing individuals he has met through theatre have become some of his closest friends, supporting Richard in some of the darkest times of his life and helping him to grow as a performer.

In regards to Richard’s plans for the future, he intends on minoring in theatre in college, and he could not be more excited to continue this legacy beyond Washingtonville. Outside of theater, Richard is very dedicated to his school work and has had a very successful high school academic career. Currently, his top school is Villanova University. Best of luck to you Richard. Break a leg!
