KEEPING UP WITH WINTER SPORTS

By BRENDAN O’LEARY

As many students are returning school after a relaxing winter break, the student athletes of Washingtonville High School have never actually left.  They have tirelessly been working and performing all through the break.  The winter sports season is now in full effect which includes boys’ and girls’ basketball, swimming, and indoor track.

First, here is a recap of the boys’ and girls’ basketball seasons thus far.  The boys varsity basketball team participated in the annual Glen McGinnis holiday tournament which featured Washingtonville, Wallkill, Fallsburg, and the host team, Cornwall.  The Wizards finished 1-1 in the tournament, losing a close contest to Cornwall with a final of 45-44 and then beating Fallsburg 83-44.  They now have an overall record of 4-2 with their next game on January 5th at Burke Catholic High School.

The girls’ varsity basketball team did not have any games over break, yet could still be found practicing almost every day of the break.  Their scheduled game against Port Jervis on December 22nd was cancelled due to inclement weather.  Their next scheduled game is January 4th against Minisink Valley which will be played at home.  They currently have an overall record of 5-2.

Swimming is also underway and in the heart of their season.  Over the break, they did not have any meets but practiced for a majority of the days off.  They have had an impressive start so far, including the first win over New Paltz in 10 years defeating them with a final score of 94-86.  Currently, they are 4-2 heading into the new year.

Since winter is upon us, the track team is now indoor and are actively involved in their new season as well.  The boys’ 4 x 200 meter relay team consisting of Sean Quinn, Cameron Aviles, Joshua Mallard, and Tony Dallman had a time of 1:32.09, breaking the state standard of 1:34.87 and are now very close to beating the school record (1:31.98).  Senior Kristen Boerke broke her previous personal record in high jump, with a height of 5’2 which is only an inch away from the state standard of 5’3.

Winter sports have been extremely successful so far and the student athletes of WHS are continuing to grow and thrive in their crafts.  Keep up the great work Wizards!
