YOUNG TALENT TAKES THE MIDDLE SCHOOL BY STORM

By CLAUDIAN FRANCIS

There is no shortage of talent in the hallways of the Washingtonville Middle School.  From gifted dance protégés, to musical geniuses and witty comedians, every student in the school has something unique and entertaining to bring to the table.

On Wednesday, November 8th, students from sixth to eighth grade showcased those talents in front of a vast audience.  Each participating student put hours of practice and preparation into putting together a well organized (and undeniably adorable) show.  The audience was amazed  at the level of talent these young students displayed, not to mention the level of confidence they exuded in front of an audience of their peers, staff members, administrators, and parents.

From selling the tickets, to organizing who would be performing on stage, the National Junior Honor Society was responsible for all aspects of the actual event. Mrs. Hoover, the adult coordinator of the event, remarked that these students “really put the work in putting the whole show together backstage.”

This year, the Washingtonville Middle School Talent Show showcased twenty memorable performances. Throughout the event, there was never been a dull moment and the students performed extraordinarily  well.  The kids truly proved that they know how to work the stage.  Though all the students did well that night, some stood out as exceptional and even received a standing ovation from the crowd.

In this year’s show, students performed as either solo artists or duets.  Featured in the show were a variety of performances, including: a karate/gymnastics routine, a praise dance routine along with other genres of dance, an array of song covers as well as a lighthearted comedic skit. The crowd was enlightened by the music selections throughout the show, which included a dance routine to Cardi B’s recent hit “Bodak Yellow” and a memorable rendition of Jason Myraz’s “I’m Yours”.  One student’s karate routine featuring Rachel Platten’s “Fight Song” was a powerful representation of girl-power and inner strength.

Non-performing students from the school came out to support their peers on stage and cheer them on. Washingtonville Middle School student, Nilia, came out to support her friends in the audience. After the show, she exclaimed, “The talent show was pretty good! I enjoyed watching my peers perform and I’ll definitely be a part of next year’s show.”

Overall, it was a great night and the kids executed their talents exquisitely well.  The students who took the time to host and run the show also did an impressive job keeping the show running smoothly while, most importantly, keeping the audience entertained.
