VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT SERVES UP A SPECTACULAR TIME FOR STUDENTS

By NICOLETTE SMITH

On Thursday, November 2, students at Washingtonville High School gathered up amateur teams to battle it out in the annual volleyball tournament.   It was a single elimination tournament, which means that once a team lost, they were expunged from the game.  The team that conquered all was then given the opportunity to play against the girls’ varsity volleyball team to prove ultimate domination.

This exciting tournament was not only an event for students to get the chance to play in a volleyball game.  It was also a fundraiser designed to raise money for the girls’ varsity volleyball team.  This year there were 14 teams that played in all, which was a much bigger turnout than last year’s tournament.  Ms. Hall, the volleyball coach, expressed, “The tournament raised about $400 for the team.”

A team of underclassmen proved victorious.  The team was called “The Inmates” and it consisted of Ryan Graham, Kael Leonard, Jake Difiore, Jianna Chapman, and Alena Keith.  Being a team of all sophomores, they had something to prove; they had to push harder to beat out the teams of upperclassmen.

Alena Keith added, “Beating the upperclassmen felt pretty good because they thought they were going to beat us by a lot, but the games were very close.  We ended up taking the win. We thought we were going to do well, but we never thought we were going to win it all.”

Since The Inmates won the tournament, they had to offset the pros: the girls’ varsity volleyball team.  After both teams put in an impressive amount of effort,  The Inmates sadly could not out beat the varsity team.  The final score was 3-0.

Alexa Kraiza, co-captain of the varsity volleyball team, proclaimed, “I think the volleyball tournament was very successful. We had more teams sign up this year than ever before, and you can tell that every team gets very into it.  The Inmates definitely put up a good fight against us and it was an overall fun night.”

The volleyball tournament was a lucrative and lively event. It raised money and gave the students of WHS a chance to duel against one another to see who the champions truly are.
