STRESS AND EXCITEMENT BUNDLED INTO ONE PROCESS

Before senior year begins, students always assume it will be a walk in the park, but according to some Washingtonville High School seniors, it is quite the opposite.  With early decision application deadlines approaching and having to prepare for the  SAT and ACT exams, seniors feel their stress levels rising through the roof.  The immense amount of stress is also accompanied by feelings of excitement for the next chapter of their lives.

Erin Tonkin, a senior at WHS, exclaimed, “I finished applying to all my colleges by the end of September. It was really stressful making sure that every college had everything that they needed to review my application, but once everything was finished I felt really excited.”  Erin intends to get her bachelor’s degree in nursing, and eventually become a nurse practitioner. She has impressively been accepted into two of her top universities, and added, “Getting those acceptance letters made all the stress of applying worth it, but waiting for the rest is very scary.”

Most of the students in the class of 2018 have similar emotions stirring inside them when it comes to the college application process.  Another WHS senior, Mikela Butler, plans on attending a university or an art school to further her education in film production. She one day hopes to enter into the film industry. Mikela believes, “The college process is both exciting and terrifying because it is going to open a new chapter in our lives, but also end the  one we've all gotten so comfortable with.” Anxiously waiting for acceptance letters makes this process even more nerve-racking.  Mikela asserted, “It is quite stressful, as I initially imagined it would be, but the worst factor is not knowing what college will accept you or if any will.”

Although senior year is full of overwhelming events like the SAT and ACT, college visits, and applying to colleges, it is also exhilarating.  Students are about to begin a new chapter of their lives making all the stress they have endured well worth it.
