FLY, EAGLE, FLY

By DEVIN LEWIS
Michael Lacroix is a name frequently heard throughout the halls of Washingtonville High School.  He is a friendly face in the hallway, a track star, and now Washingtonville’s newest Eagle Scout.  Michael is much more than just an average member of the Washingtonville community as his outstanding contributions go far beyond the walls of the high school.

Rather than playing little league baseball and CYO basketball, Lacroix focused his interests on Boy Scouts from a very young age.  Many children undertake Boy Scouts when they are young, but don't stick with it due to sports and other obligations.  However, Boy Scouts was not just any other hobby for Lacroix.  He stated, “I knew scouting was for me. I wanted to stick this out, learn all the stuff, and make it as far as I could.”

Lacroix has achieved all seven ranks of a Boy Scout, and is now striving to receive the highest rank of Eagle Scout.  Michael approached Mr. Connolly and other members of the community in search of a project that would really benefit the Washingtonville school and community.  He came across an idea to honor a member of the community, Brian Nimmo.  Although Mr. Nimmo’s time on earth was cut short, he played a major role in the Washingtonville community and was loved by everyone that was fortunate enough to know him.

Lacroix’s project involves planting a garden near the Wizard’s baseball field located behind the school.  He is planning to remove all the weeds by the flagpole and replace it with an exquisite garden in memory of Mr. Nimmo.  In addition to the garden, Mr. Connolly offered to donate solar panels to assist Lacroix’s project.  Michael exclaimed, “I wanted to remember a person that passed away and who was an enormous part of the school and community.”

Brian Nimmo’s oldest daughter, Jessica Nimmo, a senior at Washingtonville High School, was especially grateful for Michael’s considerate and thoughtful idea.  Jessica proclaimed, “It meant a lot to me because I was glad that someone outside the family was making an effort to help make the spot look better.”  Throughout the years, this community has done a tremendous job at honoring Mr. Nimmo, especially Michael Lacroix.

Michael, along with the rest of his troop, will be working on the garden in the upcoming weeks.  Lacroix should be proud of his achievements as an Eagle Scout, as well as giving back to the community in such a compassionate way.
