WASHINGTONVILLE'S BLUE-OUT RAISES AWARENESS FOR COLON CANCER

By JOHN TECKLENBURG

The Wizards Against Cancer Club hosted a “Blue-Out” on Wednesday, November 30th to show their support for people who have, or are suffering from, colon cancer. Colon cancer effects hundreds of thousands of people every year making it the third most-diagnosed type of cancer.  In addition, out of all the cancers, colon cancer is second in causing the most deaths.  Colon cancer is a deadly illness, and victims of the disease need the support of the school as well as the community.

JOHN TECKLENBURG FOR WIZARD WEEKLY
A Blue-Out is where everyone in the school wears a blue outfit of some type to show support for the victims of colon cancer and bring awareness to everyone in our school about this deadly disease. Every month, the Wizards Against Cancer Club tries to participate in a “color out” to represent and show their support for cancer victims suffering from all different types of the disease.

The club started about three years ago when Lucia Dugan came up with the idea and created the club.  It has been going strong with new members joining every year. I interviewed a member of the club, Taylor Hackett, and when asked why she liked the club she stated, “I enjoy being a part of the  club because we help bring awareness and raise money for cancer through different color-outs and fundraisers.”  Taylor decided to join the club because multiple family members suffered from cancer and have, sadly, lost their battles.  She joined the club to help spread awareness in memory of those family members.

As a member of the club, participants do have certain responsibilities. The club requires members to help promote the club and show up to the various fundraisers to assist when needed.  The reward of knowing you are showing support and raising awareness makes it worthwhile.

Cancer is among one of the leading causes of death in the United States and worldwide. Cancer is a terrible disease and people all over the world need your help and support to raise awareness of the disease. There are so many different types of cancer and millions of people are suffering. If you are willing to show your support, The Wizards Against Cancer Club holds meetings every Wednesday in Room 213. Go check it out… its an amazing experience for all!
