WHY WALK WHEN YOU CAN DANCE?

By KELLY TOM

A picture is worth a thousand words.  If this is true, how much is a dance worth?  Dancing, defined by Google, is when one “moves rhythmically to music, typically following a set sequence of steps.”  Many activities and hobbies in the school are given special recognition, but dance is not usually one of them.

WHS senior, Nicolette Smith, has been dancing for over 15 years and has been nominated for dancer of the year five times at Dance of America.  She stated that, “Dance is like nothing else, it expresses everything you’re feeling without saying anything at all, which I find very powerful.”   Nicolette was also in two professional music videos and would like to continue her dance career in college on a dance team.  Dancing has taught her “to be humble, confident, and work hard towards everything [she] does.”

Dancing is a visual version of speaking.  Senior, Lindsey Julian claimed, “Dancing helps take away the stress that I get from all the stuff going on in my life- from school, to my own anxieties, it helps keep me sane. I love how I can pour all of my emotions into a dance.”  Although, Nicolette and Lindsey dance at different studios, both have a thriving passion for dance.

Many people express their emotions and feelings on the field or court, but as an artist or dancer, they let their emotions out on the canvas and stage.  Senior, Amy Kristiansen claimed that she “[loves] that feeling on stage when you do the best you can do.”  Amy, along with many other Washingtonville dancers, can not imagine herself without dancing, just like athletes can’t imagine not playing their sport.  Amy plans to continue her passion in college, but not as a major.

When people are passionate about something, their talents truly shine through.   To feel exhilarated after giving everything on the stage is something that cannot be described using words.  Being on the stage can be nerve wracking, but all the hard work pays off in the end.  Almost everyone dances at some point in their life whether it is a prom, senior banquet, and/or parties.  However, dancing with all your heart is something completely magical.
