WRESTLING FOR THE BELT ONCE AGAIN

By TONI-ANN HOM

On April 28th, the 3rd annual Wrestle Mania Tornament took place at Washingtonville High School.  Teachers went head to head wrestling in sumo suits trying to gain victory of the famous Wrestle Mania belt.  Competing teachers from various subjects at the high school included Ms. Lane versus Ms. Denaro, Mr. McElroy versus Mrs. McElroy, Mr. Bruscino versus Mr. Wargo, and, for the title, Mr. Clough versus our very own Journalism teacher, Mrs. Connolly.  This night showed how competitive the teachers can be and how much fun they like to have as well.  During halftime, the WHS Steppers put on an amazing performance. They had all eyes on them and mouths wide open because of how impressive their moves were.

TONI-ANN HOM FOR THE WIZARD WEEKLY
This year was very different from last year’s Wrestle Mania. Last year was tournament style, meaning that the winner of each match would advance to the next round. In this year’s event, there were set matches so there was a winner for each match.  For a point to be awarded to a player, he or she either had to push the other opponent out of the circle or one of them had to fall on the mat. The first teacher to obtain 3 point won that match.

In the first round, Ms. Lane took the win.  Mr. McElroy took the win in his match against his wife, Mrs. McElroy.  In the third round, Mr. Bruscino wrestled Mr. Wargo and took the win in the most creative approach of the night: a dance off that led to a Dirty Dancing inspired leap that resulted in Wargo hitting the mat first.  The fourth match was between Mr. Cerar and Mr. Cutney where Mr. Cerar annihilated Mr. Cutney.  In the fifth and final round, Mrs. Connolly and Mr. Clough wrestled for the title.  Although it appeared that Mr. Clough won, foul play was discovered by the judges.  Mr. Clough had an advantage because his sumo suit had mysteriously been deflated. As a result, Mrs. Connolly won by default and was gladly able to receive the championship belt.

This night for Mr. Clough was very upsetting.  He put hard work and dedication into his match,  but it went downhill. Fast.  After asking Clough his thoughts on his suit malfunction, he responded, “It was a ridiculous claim. The red suit that I was wearing had a diaper that would not stay up so I was definitely at a disadvantage with the lack of diaper support. I believe that lack of diaper support, caused the air to be released from my suit.”  Mrs. Connolly felt as if this was not the first time he cheated. “I’m not surprised that he tried to get an edge over me. We have had other competitions in the past and now I am starting to question whether or not he cheated in those as well.” It seems as if Connolly and Clough are very competitive towards each other.

Mr. Clough gave his thoughts on wrestling the principal’s wife. “I feel like I wasn't going up against a girl so much as the name 'Connolly'. I knew that if anything happened to her I would have to deal with the boss, which wouldn't be good.”  After Mrs. Connolly was asked her opinion on wrestling a guy, she responded, “I wasn’t nervous about going up against him. I was more nervous about falling and hurting myself.”  With the help of Mr. Connolly cheering her on, she eventually gained victory of the coveted belt.

Other than their competitive side, Connolly and Clough are great friends and amazing class advisors for the class of 2017.  Both advisors would like to thank the class officers for making every event, such as this one, very fun-filled and entertaining for the school.  Hopefully wrestle Mania will continue to be something that Washingtonville has to offer students, and that more teachers will be interested in participating in this event.
