MURALS AT THE HIGH SCHOOL INSPIRE ALL

By ALICIA ACEVEDO

Have you ever noticed the beautiful murals covering the hallways of Washingtonville High School?  After a long unit of learning about human rights in Mrs. Wurtster’s Human Rights class, students of Washingtonville were inspired to create these masterpieces.  Human rights are ones that should be afforded to all people no matter their nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, color, religion, language, or any other status. Humans are all equally entitled to their human rights without discrimination and the murals display that message perfectly.

After students learned about human rights and looked into them more deeply in class, Mrs.Wurster, who teaches the human rights course here at the high school, decided that her “students need an outlet and they need to feel like they are making a difference and leaving a positive message.”  Students then choose which group of six they wanted to be a part of.  Next, it was time to design what they felt represented a human right that spoke to them.  The final step was  obtaining advice from an art teacher before they could begin painting.

Emily Young, a student in Mrs. Wurster’s class voiced, “We decided to go with the quotes from a  famous Lady Gaga song.”  Other students took quotes from Jimmy Carter, Martin Luther King,  and Nelson Mandela to name a few.

This project took a total of ten days for students to complete. In the end, it was an experience to remember as all the students agreed that they had a really good time. The graduating seniors are happy to know that they will be leaving a piece of them behind. The next time you are walking down the hallways,  take a moment to look at these inspirational murals and be thankful for all of the rights you are afforded.
