WIZARDS WRESTLING OFF TO A COMMANDING START

By  JOHN POVEROMO

JOHN POVEROMO FOR WIZARD WEEKLY
This past Tuesday the Washingtonville Wizard’s wrestling team was home hosting Monticello for their first match of the season. Having a record of 20-13 last year, the team is looking for an improvement during the current season.

One of the senior captains of the wrestling team, Brandon Bobe, was interviewed before the match. He claimed, “We need to score more bonus points; we have to be stingy and not hold anything back. When we have the lead, we need to try to get a major decision, tech fall or even a pin. We also need to stay consistent and work to fill in our line up.”

With much support and positivity from the senior captains, Brandon Bobe, Alex Leonty and Henry van Heemstede Obelt,  the team is working to help themselves and their teammates to sections later on in the season. For the time being, they have to go through Monticello. “We feel confident.  We have a few of our starters out of the line-up due to injury, but I feel that we are strong enough to compete with them even if we don't have our set line-up,” said Brandon Bobe.

The team’s confidence seems to have paid off.  The Wizards beat Monticello 64-20 in a crushing first win of the season. This will encourage the team to be confident going into their next match. A factor that helped with the Wizard’s tremendous win was pins from, Brandon Bobe, Alex Leonty, Neff Gomez, Matt Casey, Max Kissak, Nick Solek, Vincent Genero and Ben Santarpia, eight out of the fifteen wrestlers who competed at yesterday’s match.

Senior Captain, Alex Leonty, had the quickest win of the night pinning his opponent in 18 seconds.  About the win Alex said, “Overall it was great to see the team put on such a great match even through a few injuries.  It showed our heart and our resilience as we head into the season.” Having strong support and confidence from your team captains can impact how the team’s future.

The next home match is Tuesday, December 6th, against Saugerties. Come show the team support.  We wish the Washingtonville wrestlers the best of luck through the regular season!
